Introduction

This Office Book in Kiswahili was prepared by the Society of SS. Peter and Paul for use in the Anglican Diocese of Zanzibar during the episcopate of Frank Weston (1871-1924, bishop 1907-1924), but published during the term of his immediate successor Thomas Birley (1865-1949, bishop 1925-1943). It represents a considerable liturgical enrichment of the Book of Common Prayer, including two sets of pagination: 1-128 for Vespers from the traditional western Breviary, and 1-104 in the same binding for Kiswahili translations of Latin office hymns, with antiphons. Like many SSPP publications, it includes Baroque woodcuts and text ornaments to accompany the liturgical text.

This edition is not listed in David Griffiths's Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1549-1999 (London: The British Library; New Castle, Delaware: Oak Knoll Press, 2002).
