The Little Missal for the Laity, Compiled from Authorised Sources by a Committee of Laymen, the Translation of the Canon Being That of Bishop Miles Coverdale.
London: The Faith Press, [1916].

This adaptation of the Order of the Administration of the Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer was produced by an anonymous committee of Anglo-Catholic laymen. It is significant for its inclusion of additional services of preparation and thanksgiving before and after the rite. It is also noteworthy for the use of a translation of the eucharistic canon by Myles Coverdale (1488-1569), Bible translator and Bishop of Exeter (1551-1553). Coverdale's Psalter is still used in the Book of Common Prayer.

This text was transcribed by Richard Mammana in 2013 from a personal copy of the 47-page original.

Antiphon. Remember not.

Ps. 84. Quam dilecta

O

HOW amiable are thy dwellings: thou Lord of hosts.
My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young: even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be alway praising thee.
Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee: in whose heart are thy ways.
Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well: and the pools are filled with water.
They will go from strength to strength: and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion.
O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer: hearken, O God of Jacob.
Behold, O God our defender: and look upon the face of thine Anointed.
For one day in thy courts: is better than a thousand.
I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God: than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness.
For the Lord God is a light and defence: the Lord will give grace and worship, and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly live.
O Lord God of hosts: blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Ps. 130. De profundis

O

UT of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.
O let thine ears consider well: the voice of my complaint.
If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss: O Lord, who may abide it?
For there is mercy with thee: therefore shalt thou be feared.
I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him: in his word is my trust.
My soul fleeth unto the Lord: before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch.
O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is plenteous redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel: from all his sins.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Antiphon. Remember not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our forefathers: neither take thou vengeance of our sins.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed by thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

I said, Lord, be merciful unto me;
Heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.
Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last;
And be gracious unto thy servants.
Let thy merciful kindness, O Lord, be upon us;
As we do put our trust in thee.
Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness;
And thy saints sing with joyfulness.
Cleanse thou me from my secret faults;
Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins.
Lord, hear my prayer;
And let my crying come unto thee.

M

OST gracious God, incline thy merciful ears to our prayers, and enlighten our hearts with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that we may worthily assist at thy holy mysteries, and love thee with an everlasting love.

O Lord, we beseech thee, may the Comforter, who proceedeth from thee, illuminate our minds, and lead us, as thy Son hath promised, into all truth.

O Lord, we beseech thee, may the power of the Holy Ghost be with us, and most mercifully cleanse and purge our hearts, and defend us from all adversities.

Cleanse our consciences, we beseech thee, O Lord, by thy visitation, that thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, when he cometh, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself.

Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

For a Right Belief Concerning the Holy Eucharist.

A

LMIGHTY and everliving Father, who hast promised unto thy faithful people life by thy incarnate Son, even as he liveth by thee; grant unto us all, and especially to those whom thy providence hath in any wise entrusted with the treasure of thy holy doctrine amongst us, thy good Spirit, always so to believe and understand, to feel and firmly to hold, to speak and to think, concerning the mystery of the communion of the body and blood of thy dear Son, as shall be well pleasing to thee and profitable to our souls; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer before Communion.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, behold, I approach the sacrament of thine only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. As one sick, I come to the Physician of life: as unclean, to the Fountain of mercy: as blind, to the Light of eternal splendour: as needy, to the Lord of heaven and earth: as naked, to the King of glory: a lost sheep, to the good Shepherd: a fallen creature, to its Creator: desolate, to the kind Comforter: miserable, to the Pitier: guilty, to the Bestower of pardon: sinful, to the Justifier: hardened, to the Infuser of grace.

I implore therefore the abundance of thine infinite majesty, that thou wouldest vouchsafe to heal my sickness, to wash away my foulness, to enlighten my darkness, to enrich my poverty, and to clothe my nakedness; that I may receive the bread of angels, the King of kings and Lord of lords, with such reverence and fear, such contrition and love, such faith and purity, such devotion and humility, as is expedient for the welfare of my soul. Grant me, I beseech thee, to receive not only the sacrament of the LordŐs body and blood, but also the virtue of the sacrament. O most merciful God, grant me to receive the body of thine only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ, which he took of the Virgin Mary, that I may be incorporated into his mystical body, and ever reckoned among his members. And, O most loving Father, grant me that he whom I now purpose to receive under a veil, I may at length behold with open face, even thy beloved Son; who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The Preparation

Ps. 43. Judica me Deus

G

IVE sentence with me, O God, and defend my cause against the ungodly people: O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.
For thou art the God of my strength, why hast thou put me from thee: and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?
O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me: and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling.
And that I may go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness: and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God, my God.
Why art thou so heavy, O my soul: and why art thou so disquieted within me?
O put thy trust in God: for I will yet give him thanks, which is the help of my countenance, and my God.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Antiphon. I will go unto the altar of God: even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

V. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.
R. Who hath made heaven and earth.

I

CONFESS to Almighty God, to blessed Mary, ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beg blessed Mary, ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

M

AY the Almighty and merciful Lord grant us + pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins. Amen.

V. Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, O Lord.
R. That thy people may rejoice in thee.
V. Shew us thy mercy, O Lord.
R. And grant us thy salvation.
V. Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto thee.
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.

The LordŐs Prayer.

O

UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed by thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Collect for Purity.

A

LMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Ten Commandments.

Minister.

G

OD spake these words, and said: I am the Lord thy God: Thou shalt have none other gods but me.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my commandments.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless, that taketh his Name in vain.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath-day. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all that thou hast to do; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long in the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Thou shalt do no murder.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Thou shalt not steal.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
Minister. Thou shalt not covey thy neighbourŐs house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbourŐs wife, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

Let us pray.

The Collect for the King.

A

LMIGHTY God, whose kingdom is everlasting, and power infinite; Have mercy upon the whole Church; and so rule the heart of thy chosen Servant George, our King and Governour, that he (knowing whose minister he is) may above all things seek thy honour and glory: and that we, and all his subjects (duly considering whose authority he hath) may faithfully serve, honour, and humbly obey him, in thee, and for thee, according to thy blessed Word and ordinance; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Or,

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God we are taught by thy holy Word, that the hearts of Kings are in thy rule and governance, and that thou dost dispose and turn them as it seemeth best to thy godly wisdom: We humbly beseech thee so to dispose and govern the heart of George thy Servant, our King and Governour, that, in all his thoughts, words, and works, he may ever seek thy honour and glory, and study to preserve thy people committed to his charge, in wealth, peace, and godliness: Grant this, O merciful Father, for thy dear SonŐs sake, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then shall be said the
Collect for the Day,
and immediately afterwards the priest shall read the
Epistle.

After the Epistle, say
Thanks be to God.

Before the Holy Gospel, say

The Lord be in my heart that rightly and meetly I may hear his holy Gospel.

When the
Gospel
is announced, say
Glory be to thee, O Lord.
After the Holy Gospel, say
Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Creed.

I

BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible:

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man, And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord and Giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one [Holy,] Catholick and Apostolick Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead, And the + life of the world to come. Amen.

The Offertory Sentences.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Blessed be the man that provideth for the poor and needy: the Lord shall deliver him in the time of trouble.

The Offertory Prayers.

O

HOLY Father, almighty and everlasting God, accept this oblation, which I thy unworthy servant now join in offering unto thee; for thou art my living and true God: so let me plead for all my countless sins, wickedness and neglect; and for all those here present, as also for all the faithful in Christ, both quick and dead, that it may set forward their salvation and mine, till we attain eternal life. Amen.

O

GOD, who hast laid the foundations of manŐs being in wonder and honour, and again in great wonder hast adorned the same: Grant that, by the mystery of this water and wine, he who shared with us our human nature may make us to be co-heirs of his very Godhead, even Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord: Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

W

E here present to thee, O Lord, the Cup of Salvation; and of thy mercy grant that in the sight of thy royal Godhead it may ascend as a sweet-smelling savour for our salvation, and that of all the whole world. Amen.

W

ITH humble spirits and contrite souls, let us now enter thy presence, O Lord, and so offer our sacrifice to thee, that it may this day be precious in thy sight, O Lord our God.

C

OME, O thou Fount of Holiness, almighty, eternal God: and bless this sacrifice made ready for thy holy Name.

When there is no incense omit the prayers marked with an *.

*

M

AY blessed Michael the Archangel, who stands at the right hand of the Altar of incense, together with all the saints, intercede; and thus may the Lord vouchsafe to ble+ss this incense and accept it as a sweet-smelling savour. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

*

L

ET my prayer, O Lord, be set forth in thy sight as the incense: and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth: and keep the door of my lips. O let not mine heart be inclined to any evil thing: let me not be occupied in ungodly works with the men that work wickedness.

*

M

AY the Lord kindle in us the fire of his love, and the flame of his everlasting charity. Amen.

I

WILL wash my hands in innocency, O Lord: and so will I go to thine altar.
That I may shew the voice of thanksgiving: and tell of all thy wondrous works.
Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house: and the place where thine honour dwelleth.
In whose hands is wickedness: and their right hand is full of gifts.
But as for me, I will walk innocently: O deliver me, and be merciful unto me.

My foot standeth right: I will praise the Lord in the congregations.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

R

ECEIVE, O holy Trinity, this oblation which we present to thee in memory of the Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension, of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us be to thy honour and our salvation: and grant that while on earth we remember thy Saints, they may plead for us in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Prayer for the Church.

Let us pray for the whole state of ChristŐs Church militant here in earth.

A

LMIGHTY and everliving God, who by holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks, for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant, that all they that do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity, and godly love. We beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian Kings, Princes, and Governours; and specially thy Servant George our King; that under him we may be godly and quietly governed: And grant unto his whole Council, and to all that are put in authority under him, that they may truly and indifferently minister justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and Curates, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments: And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and specially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all them, who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom: Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

The Short Exhortation.

Y

E that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

The General Confession.

A

LMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus ChristŐs sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution.

A

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Comfortable Words.

Hear also what Saint Paul saith.

This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I St. Timothy i. 15.

Hear also what Saint John saith.

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins. I St. John ii. 1.

The Sursum Corda.

Priest. The Lord be with you.
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Priest. Lift up your hearts.
Answer. We lift them up unto the Lord.
Priest. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
Answer. It is meet and right so to do.

The Ferial Preface.

I

T is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, *Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God.

*These words [Holy Father] must be omitted on Trinity-Sunday.

¦ Here shall follow the proper Preface, according to the time, if there be any specially appointed: or else immediately shall follow.

T

HEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:

The Sanctus.

H

OLY, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Proper Prefaces.

Upon Christmas-day, and seven days after.

B

ECAUSE thou didst give Jesus Christ thine only Son to be born as at this time for us: who, by the operation of the Holy Ghost, was made very man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his mother; and that without spot of sin, to make us clean from all sin. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Upon Easter-day, and seven days after.

B

UT chiefly are we bound to praise thee for the glorious Resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord: for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by his death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Upon Ascension-day, and seven days after.

T

HROUGH thy most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his most glorious Resurrection manifestly appeared to all his Apostles, and in their sight ascended up into heaven to prepare a place for us; that where he is, thither we might also ascend, and reign with him in glory. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Upon Whitsunday, and six days after.

T

HROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord; according to whose most true promise, the Holy Ghost came down as at this time from heaven with a sudden great sound, as it had been a mighty wind, in the likeness of fiery tongues, lighting upon the Apostles, to teach them, and to lead them to all truth; giving them both the gift of divers languages, and also boldness with fervent zeal constantly to preach the Gospel unto all nations; whereby we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and true knowledge of thee, and of thy Son Jesus Christ. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Upon the Feast of Trinity only.

W

HO art one God, one Lord; not one only Person, but three Persons in one Substance. For that which we believe of the glory of the Father, the same we believe of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, without any difference or inequality. Therefore with Angels, &c.

The Anaphora, or Canon.

T

HEREFORE, most gracious Father, through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, we humbly beseech thee that thou accept and bless these gifts, these presents, these holy and unspotted sacrifices which, first of all, we offer unto thee for thy holy Catholic Church, that thou vouchsafe to pacify, keep, unite and govern it throughout the whole world: with thy servant our Chief Bishop N, and our Bishop N, and our King N, and all true believers, and such as have the Catholic and Apostolic faith in due estimation.

R

EMEMBER, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids N and N (and here shall be mentioned those for whom you desire to pray), and all that stand here round about, whose faith and devotion unto thee is known and manifest; for whom we offer unto thee, or which themselves offer unto thee, this sacrifice of praise for them and theirs, for the redemption of their souls, for the hope of their salvation and health, and render their vows unto thee, the eternal, living, and true God.

C

OMMUNICATING, and worshipping the memorial, first of the glorious and ever Virgin Mary, the Mother of our God and Lord Jesu Christ, and also of thy blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter, Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Thaddeus, Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Laurence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian, and of all thy Saints: by whose merits and prayers grant thou that in all things we may be defended with the help of thy protection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HEREFORE, Lord, we beseech thee that thou, being pacified, wilt receive this oblation of our bounden service and of all thy household; and order our days in thy peace, and command us to be delivered from eternal damnation, and to be numbered in the flock of thine elect, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

W

HICH oblation we beseech thee, O Almighty God, in all things to make blessed, appointed, ratified, reasonable and acceptable; that unto us it may be the Body and Blood of thy most dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesu Christ.

The Prayer of Humble Access.

W

E do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Prayer of Consecration.

A

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again: Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of this most blessed Body and Blood:

W

HO in the same night that he was betrayed, took Bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Amen.

W

HEREFORE, O Lord, we also, thy servants, and thy holy people, being mindful as well of the blessed passion and resurrection, as of the glorious ascension of the same Christ thy Son, our Lord God, do offer unto thy excellent Majesty of thy own rewards and gifts, a pure host, a holy host, an undefiled host, the holy bread of eternal life, and the cup of eternal salvation.

V

OUCHSAFE thou also, with a merciful and pleasant countenance, to have respect hereunto, and to accept the same, as thou didst vouchsafe to accept the gifts of thy righteous servant Abel, and the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham, and the holy sacrifice, the undefiled host, that the high priest Melchisedek did offer unto thee.

W

E humbly beseech thee, O Almighty God, command thou these to be brought by the hands of thy holy Angel unto thy high Altar in the presence of thy Divine Majesty, that as many of us as of this partaking of the Altar shall receive thy SonŐs holy Body and Blood may be replenished with all heavenly benediction and grace, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

R

EMEMBER, Lord, also the souls of thy handmaidens, N and N, which are gone before us with the mark of faith, and rest in the sleep of peace. We beseech thee, O Lord, that unto them, and unto all such as rest in Christ, thou wilt grant a place of refreshing, of light, and of peace, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

U

NTO us sinners also, thy servants, hoping of the multitude of thy mercies, vouchsafe to give some portion and fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs; with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all thy Saints; within whose fellowship we beseech thee to admit us, not weighing our merit but granting us forgiveness through Christ our Lord, by whom, O Lord, all these good things thou dost ever create; thou sanctifiest; thou quickenest; thou blesses, and givest unto us, through him, and with him, and in him, is unto thee God, Father Almighty, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Let us pray.

Being advertised by wholesome precepts, and taught by GodŐs institution, we are bold to say,

Amen.

D

ELIVER us, we beseech thee, O Lord, from all evil, past, present, and for to come; and that, by the intercession of the blessed, glorious, and ever Virgin Mary the Mother of God, and thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul and Andrew, with all thy Saints, give peace graciously in our days, that we being helped through the succour of thy mercy may both be always free from sin and safe from all trouble; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, who, with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen.

V. The peace of the Lord be always with you.
R. And with thy spirit.

O

LAMB of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. [At Requiems is said: Give them rest.]
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. [At Requiems is said: Give them rest.]

M

AY this holy mingling together of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesu Christ be unto me, and to all that receive it, salvation of mind and body; a wholesome preparation both to deserve and receive eternal life; through the same Christ our Lord.

O

LORD, holy Father, almighty, eternal God, grant us so worthily to take this holy Body and Blood of thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that by this we may merit to receive forgiveness of all our sins, and be replenished with thy Holy Spirit, and to have thy peace: for thou art God alone, neither is there any other without thee, whose glorious kingdom and empire endureth continually, world without end. Amen.

O

LORD Jesu Christ, thou Son of the living God, who according to the will of the Father, the Holy Ghost working withal, hast quickened the world through thy death, deliver us, we beseech thee, through this thy holy Body and Blood, from all our iniquities and from all evils. And make us always to obey thy commandments, and suffer us never to be separated from thee for evermore, thou Saviour of the world, who, with God the Father and the same Holy Ghost, livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.

The Prayer of Oblation.

O

LORD and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that all we, who are partakers of this holy Communion, may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction. And although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the Unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

The Last Gospel.

V. The Beginning of the Holy Gospel, according to Saint John.
R. + Glory be to thee O Lord.

I

N the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was Life: and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man which cometh into the world. He was in the world and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the Sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the Only-Begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.

            . Thanks be to God.

Antiphon. Let us sing the Song of the Three Children.

Canticle. Benedicite omnia opera

O

YE priests of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise him, and magnify him for ever.
O ye servants of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise him, and magnify him for ever.
O ye spirits and souls of the righteous, bless ye the Lord: praise him, and magnify him for ever.
O ye holy and humble men of heart, bless ye the Lord: praise him, and magnify him for ever.
O Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, bless ye the Lord: praise him, and magnify him for ever.

Ps. 150. Laudate Dominum

O

PRAISE God in his holiness: praise him in the firmament of his power.
Praise him in his noble acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
Praise him in the sound of the trumpet: praise him upon the lute and harp.
Praise him in the cymbals and dances: praise him upon the strings and pipe.
Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals: praise him upon the loud cymbals.
Let everything that hath breath: praise the Lord.

Nunc dimittis

L

ORD, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and every shall be: world without end. Amen.

Antiphon. Let us sing the Song of the Three Children: which they sang as they blessed the Lord in the furnace of fire.

Amen.

Let us bless the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost;
Let us praise him and magnify him for ever.
Blessed art thou, O Lord, in the firmament of heaven;
And greatly to be praised, and glorified for ever.
The almighty and merciful Lord guard us and give us his blessing. Amen.

Enter not into judgment with thy servant, O Lord;
For in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts;
Shew the light of thy countenance, and we shall be whole.
Lord, hear our prayer;
And let our crying come unto thee.

O God who for thy three servants didst assuage the flames of fire; mercifully grant that the flames of sin may not kindle upon us thy servants.

Lord, burn with the fire of thy Holy Spirit our reins and our hearts, that we may serve thee with chaste bodies and please thee with pure minds.

Prevent us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious favour, and further us with thy continual help: that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally by thy mercy obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Thanksgiving after Communion.

W

E give thanks to thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, who, not for any merit of ours, but of the condescension of thy mercy only, has vouchsafed to feed us sinners, thine unworthy servants, with the precious Body and Blood of thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. And we humbly entreat thy boundless clemency, almighty and merciful Lord, that this Holy Communion may not bring guilt upon us to condemnation, but may be to us for pardon and salvation. Let it be unto us an armour of faith, and a shield of good resolution. Let is be unto us a riddance of all vices, an extermination of all evil desires and lusts, and an increase of love and patience, of humility and obedience, and all virtues; a firm defence against the wiles of all enemies, visible or invisible; a perfect quieting of all sinful impulses, fleshly or spiritual; a firm adherence to thee, the one true God, and a perfect consummation of our end. And we pray thee that thou wouldest vouchsafe to bring us sinners to that ineffable feast, where thou, with thy Son and the Holy Ghost, art to thy saints true light, full and everlasting joy, and perfect happiness.

Moreover we beseech thee, O Lord, that this Holy Communion may be unto us a guide and provision for our way unto the haven of everlasting salvation. May it be to us comfort when we are sad at heart, sweetness and love in every good resolve, patience in trouble and anguish, and medicine in sickness. And, by these most holy mysteries which we have received, grant us right faith, firm hope, and perfect charity, renunciation of the world, purification of desire, gladness of mind, fervent love of thee, and a devout remembrance and inward affection for the passion of thy beloved Son, together with grace to keep our lives full of virtues and of faith unfeigned in the love and praise of thee. And, in the hour of our departure, grant us to receive the grace of this great mystery with true faith, sure hope and sincere charity, that we may see thee evermore. Amen.

Aspirations after Communion.

B

EHOLD, O Lord, I now have thee, who hast all things. I possess thee, who possesses all things, and canst do all things: take off my heart, then, O my God and my all, from all other things but thee; for in them there is nothing but vanity and vexation of spirit. Let my heart be fixed on thee alone; let me ever repose in thee, for in thee is my treasure, in thee is the sovereign truth, true happiness, and a blessed eternity.

Let my soul, O Lord, feel the sweetness of thy presence. Let me taste how sweet thou art, O Lord, that, being allured by thy love, I may never more run after worldly pleasures; for thou art the joy of my heart, and my portion for ever.

Thou art the Physician of my soul, who healest all our infirmities by thy sacred Blood. I am that sick man whom thou camest from heaven to heal: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.

Thou art the good Shepherd, who hast laid down thy life for thy sheep. Behold, I am that sheep that was lost, and yet thou vouchsafest to feed me with thy Body and Blood: take me now upon thy shoulders, and carry me home. What canst thou deny me, who hast given me thyself? Guide thou me, and I shall want nothing in the pastures in which thou hast placed me, until thou bringest me to the happy pastures of eternal life.

O true Light, which enlightenest every man that cometh into this world, enlighten mine eyes, that I may never sleep in death.

O King of heaven and earth, rich in mercy, behold, I am poor and needy: thou knowest what I stand most in need of; thou alone canst assist and enrich me. Help me, O God; and, out of the treasures of thy bounty, succour my needy soul.

Thou art the Lamb of God, the Lamb without spot, who takest away the sins of the world: take away from me whatever may hurt me and displease thee, and give me what thou knowest to be pleasing to thee and profitable to myself.

O my God and my all, may the flame of thy love absorb my soul, that I may die to the world for the love of thee, who hast vouchsafed to die upon the cross for the love of me. Amen.

Anima Christi

S

OUL of Christ, sanctify me,
Body of Christ, save me,
Blood of Christ, refresh me,
Water from the side of Christ, wash me,
Passion of Christ, strengthen me,

O good Jesu, hear me,
Within thy wounds hide me,
Suffer me not to be separated from thee.

From the malicious enemy defend me,
In the hour of my death call me,
And bid me come to thee,
That with thy Saints I pay praise thee
For all eternity. Amen.

Deo gratias
