This book was compiled from materials produced by the people and clergy of St. John’s church, including material from Portions of the Book of Common Prayer and Hymns in the Cree-Indian Language (The Rev. and Mrs. W. G. Walton, 1923) The Book of Common Prayer, Canada (BCP 1959), The Book of Alternative Services of the Anglican Church of Canada (BAS 1985) and the Naskapi New Testament (2007). The Holy Eucharist is based on the liturgy from the BAS, Father Bryce Sangster’s version (2002). Evening Prayer is based on the liturgy from the BCP, Father David Phillips’ version (1997).

Introduction

Naskapi is an Algonquian language spoken by the Naskapi people in northern Quebec and Labrador, primarily in the communities of Kawawachikamach (Quebec) and Natuashish (Labrador). The first Anglican contact with the Naskapi came through missionary presence at stations of the Hudson's Bay Company in what are now northern Quebec and Labrador.

Diglot Naskapi-English liturgical materials based on the 1962 Canadian Book of Common Prayer were prepared for local use during the tenure of the Reverend David Phillips as vicar of St. John's Anglican Church, Kawawachikamach.

They were formatted for online distribution in Portable Document Format by Bill Jancewicz, a SIL-affiliated translator and lexicographer of Naskapi who has produced a wide array of material in this language.
